Who is L. R. fern?

The L. R. in L. R. Fern stands for Lee Rufus. The family legend goes that my grandfather went by just these initials before he joined the Navy during WWII. Upon enlisting, he was told that he couldn’t use just letters as his official name, and Lee Rufus was born. He was a legendary entrepreneurial force in my family, and this venture is dedicated to his legacy.

I’ve wanted to be an artist since I was first informed that you have to pick a job. There was no doubt in my mind that was what I’d be when grew up. As a young artist, maybe around 11 years old, I was told by my long-time art teacher Ms. Brooks that I thought like a graphic designer. I latched on to that and eventually attended Savannah College of Art and Design. Practicality and fear won out, and I walked out with an advertising design degree.

This brand is me getting back to my roots while appreciating and flexing the skills I’ve developed over the last decade plus of design experience. L. R. Fern is my exploration of being a working artist, merging my design experience with my long-held love of drawing and hand lettering. It is an outlet for my entrepreneurial spirit and a way for me to serve others through my art. If you have an idea you’d like to bring to life, let’s make it happen.
